So, how many boulder areas exist in Ticino? How many boulders exist? How many problems exist?
For bouldering fans from all over the world, the Canton Ticino area is an inexhaustible treasure and is now a must. Cresciano, Chironico, Passo del Gottardo, Brione Verzasca are certainly the most famous areas, synonymous with quality … but we could also add Val Bavona, Avegno in Valle Maggia or the nearby Val Calanca in the Italian-speaking part of Graubünden.
Additional areas are still being developed and we hope soon to be in a position to present information to our readers. We know climbers are very fond of exciting challenges and Cresciano, Chironico, Brione Verzasca or the Passo del Gottardo will certainly give them full satisfaction. In any event - we wish you “welcome” in the site ticinoboulder.ch.

VALLEMAGGIA BOULDER

Shaped by stone and surrounded by remarkable natural landscapes, Vallemaggia offers everything from the famous gorges of the lower valley to newly discovered bouldering areas above 2000 metres. In this guide are presented 14 areas and around 1300 boulder problems.
Avegno and Giumaglio are the main areas of the lower valley, while further upstream lie lesser-known sectors, some discovered many years ago, later abandoned and eventually rediscovered and developed again. Mystery and Magic... or simply Magic.
Also included are two major sectors in the legendary Val Bavona. Other particularly sensitive areas have deliberately been left out, following a shared decision with local climbers. This is not about exclusivity, but about respecting a beautiful and fragile natural and cultural environment.
In the upper valley, the areas around the Naret and Mognola lakes are two special gems. When the summer heat becomes too much, the altitude, clear air, beautiful surroundings and excellent rock provide the perfect escape.

Over recent years The Gotthard Pass has gradually become a favoured rather than an optional summer bouldering area. Its location (boulders at 2000 meters above sea level) makes it particularly pleasant during the hot summer days. The presence of lichens (which never prejudices or disturbs the ascents) gives it the fascination of the more northern lands, completely different from the known areas in Ticino.
Its beauty and the consistent number of problems makes it the third part of the triad of the Swiss Alps, together with Magic Wood and the Susten Pass. Because of this development we have now updated the Guide Book 2025 for this interesting and very special place for bouldering, and we hope that it will offer you enjoyable climbing days. Today there are 29 sectors and up to 1200 problems!

21 years have gone by since we embarked on the exhilarating adventure of publishing the first guide to the boulders of Cresciano as part of the "TicinoBoulder" chain. These 21 years are no more than the blink of an eye, an insignificant time lapse, when compared to the geological ages and the history of the boulders spread throughout the slopes of the Ticino mountains.
The new guidebook has grown thanks to the efforts of other climbing friends (locals and from elsewhere) who have discovered and developed new sites. Today we can unveil other very interesting bouldering areas, little jewels so far unknown to most. Preonzo, Prosito, Lodrino, Biasca and Malvaglia have been added to the well-known historic sites of the area. These areas are appealing for everyone (including families), there are lines of all grades and for all tastes.

Timeless Ticino. It was only 12 years ago I walked up to a waterfall that always intrigued me above Biasca, where the Ri della Froda falls from the Cima di Biasca down a gargantuan face. I remember the first time I came to Ticino, entering the valley from Gottardo, I was awe inspired by this water falling thousands of feet down a mountain, I had never seen anything like it. That would become a trend.

VERZASCA BOULDER

You will be climbing in a beautiful and varied environment. You can climb in pristine forests and in a true maze of boulders located by the spectacular Verzasca river. But beware, the river may be beautiful, it is at least as dangerous. Other bouldering areas are located in scenic meadows in the proximity of typical stone houses of the Verzasca valley. These meadows are still used by farmers for gaining hay. Therefore, access to these sites is restricted in certain times of the year.
The boulders are of compact and perfect gneis, which offers a vast variety of climbing styles ranging from slabs and crimpy face climbs all the way to overhangs. Climbing requires a good technique, but many problems will not go without a fair amount of finger strength.
The best climbing seasons are spring and autumn. Today there are 19 sectors and up to 500 problems! What else?..

At the beginning, the name was “Cresciano Boulder”. The project by Claudio Cameroni and Renzo Lodi was almost born as a joke. The initial idea was to collect and put on paper the large number of problems and main information of boulders that the increasingly popular Cresciano offered.
As of that time, in early 2000, Cresciano started to be a reference for bouldering to every climber. These were the years of Dreamtime and the news about a new level in bouldering…
